Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

Almost every home contants hazardous products, or products that can harm human health or the environment if improperly handled. Examples are: motor oil, antifreeze, automobile fluids, pesticides, drain, floor and oven cleaners, gasoline, mothballs, disinfectants, weed killers, paint thinners, and oil-based paints.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is often disposed of improperly by pouring wastes down the drain, on the ground, or putting them out with the trash. The dangers of such disposalmethods may not be immediately obvious, but many types of household waste has the potential to cause physical injury to sanitation workers, to contaminate septic tanks or wastewater treatment systems if poured down drains or toilets, contaminate ground water, and present hazards to children and pets if left around the home.
If you need to use products with hazardous components, buy and use only the amount needed. Leftover material can be shared with friends and neighbors.
Clark County residents have a safe, secure and easy way to dispose of HHW at the CCSWMD facility located at 9208 Highway 62 in Charlestown, Indiana. To ensure that proper staffing is available when you arrive, please call (812) 256-7942 for an appointment. Office hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday - Friday.
